Grossman Young & Hammond Expands International Protection Practice with Addition of France-based, Former Interpol CCF Attorney Charlie Magri as Of Counsel

Washington, DC – September 17, 2024 – Grossman Young & Hammond continues to establish itself as the DC-area’s premier International Protection Practice (IPP) with the addition of Charlie Magri as Of Counsel. Magri, a distinguished attorney and former Legal Officer at the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF), brings unparalleled expertise to the firm’s already robust team.

The IPP focuses on helping foreign nationals fight abusive INTERPOL Red Notices, apply for immigration benefits in the United States, including asylum, as well as file complementary human rights filings before international bodies. Transnational repression via INTERPOL is an increasingly hot topic, touching on white-collar criminal matters, international arbitration disputes, human rights, and immigration issues.

While most Red Notices are legitimate, many are not, and can wreak havoc on the lives of political dissidents, entrepreneurs and other persecuted individuals. Earlier this year, ABC News highlighted one such case – the detention of migrant mother Jessica Barahona Martinez – who Partner Sandra Grossman helped free after six  years of wrongful detention on the basis of an illegitimate Red Notice. An untold number of similar cases exist.

Magri’s addition to the practice provides the IPP with critical insight into the inner workings of INTERPOL, providing the firm and its clients with additional tools and strategies for clearing their names from INTERPOL databases.  During his time at the CCF, Magri received and processed requests for the deletion of data from INTERPOL’s files, involving thorough reviews and the preparation of materials for the Commission’s deliberation. His work, guided by INTERPOL’s Rules and Constitution, human rights principles, and international legal standards, affords him a much sought-after and in-depth knowledge of the CCF’s jurisprudence and procedures. The firm’s clients will benefit from his specialized insight, essential for handling the most complex of INTERPOL legal challenges. Magri now heads his own firm, Otherside, located in France.

“We are thrilled to have Charlie join our team,” said Sandra Grossman, Managing Partner and Lead Partner of the International Protection Practice. “His background with INTERPOL’s CCF and his commitment to defending individual rights on the international stage, align perfectly with our mission to provide cutting-edge, comprehensive protection to our clients. His arrival significantly strengthens our capabilities in this highly specialized area of law.”

Magri’s addition marks a key milestone for GYH’s International Protection Practice, which is already recognized for its innovative solutions and strategic advocacy in complex cross-border cases. The practice is dedicated to safeguarding clients from political persecution, unfair prosecution, and the misuse of international law enforcement mechanisms.

“I am truly honored to join Grossman Young & Hammond and contribute to their leading International Protection Practice,” said Magri. “Joining the exceptional team at GYH allows me to draw upon my INTERPOL experience and expertise to help clients address complex issues and achieve just outcomes.”
