Dree K. Collopy is Of Counsel to Grossman Young & Hammond. She is a U.S. immigration lawyer with nearly two decades of experience and has earned her reputation as a creative, steadfast, and compassionate advocate, capable of handling the most complex matters.
For nearly two decades, Dree has represented individuals and families seeking protection from persecution and torture, as well as other relief and immigration benefits, before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the U.S. immigration courts and Board of Immigration Appeals, and the U.S. courts of appeals. As a member of the adjunct faculty at the American University Washington College of Law, and previously the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, she has taught courses on asylum and refugee law, law and public policy, and directed a clinical course on immigration court representation.
A recognized expert on U.S. asylum law and policy, Dree served as chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s (AILA) National Asylum and Refugee Committee for a decade and is the author of AILA’s Asylum Primer, the leading treatise on U.S. asylum law and practice for immigration practitioners. She serves on national working groups that track, respond to, and shape U.S. asylum and refugee law and policy.
Dree frequently lectures and publishes on cutting-edge immigration issues and is often quoted in the press. She has been an opinion contributor to The Hill, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and Forbes, and has briefed members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and White House staff on family detention, the push factors contributing to migration from the Northern Triangle of Central America, and asylum law and policy. She frequently shares her expertise and experience, training and advising other immigration lawyers around the country, particularly with regard to complex asylum matters.
Dree was honored with the Joseph Minsky award, one of AILA’s highest honors, for her contributions to the field of immigration law, as well as the Michael Maggio Pro Bono Award and the AILA President’s Commendation Award three times. She has been recognized as one of the nation’s top immigration lawyers by Chambers and Partners, the preeminent legal rankings guide, and Washingtonian Magazine has repeatedly recognized her as one of “Washington’s Top Lawyers.” Dree earned her Juris Doctor degree and certificate in law and public policy at the Catholic University Columbus School of Law and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College.
